Different Types Of YouTube Ads

Skippable In-Stream Ads

This is the most common type of YouTube ad which most people will come across and be familiar with even if they’ve watched a few videos on the platform.

Skippable in-stream ads are displayed before or during a video where users can choose to skip the advertisement after watching it for the first 5 seconds (ads need to be at least 12 seconds long).

For advertisers and businesses, you only pay when a user either watches your ad for at least 30 seconds or takes action such as clicking on your ad, whichever comes first.

This type of ad is known as pay-per-view advertisement, PPV in short.

Non-Skippable In-Stream Ads

This is another type of YouTube ads where users can NOT skip the advertisement, instead the ads are shorter (about 6-15 seconds long) compared to skippable in-stream ads.

Advertisers and businesses pay every time their advertisement is displayed to users, also known as pay-per-impression, at CPM (per 1,000 views).

Running non-skippable in-stream ads can be useful if a business is trying to reach as many customers as it can with the allocated budget and increase its brand awareness.

Video Discovery Ads

This type of YouTube ads is almost the same as Google pay-per-click advertisement.

Advertisers and businesses can set up a video discovery ad campaign to show their video ads when a user searches for a specific keyword or a search term.

You’ll only pay when users click on your video on YouTube search results page.

Non-Video Ads

This type of YouTube is for you if your business hasn’t got the budget to create video advertisement or you just want to run display ads on the platform.

The advertisement will be displayed on the right-hand sidebar with an image, title, text and a call-to-action (CTA) button which will direct users to a link to your website.

Also, you can choose to display your advertisement on YouTube videos as a floating text advertisement.

You’ll only be charged for clicks. Pay-per-click ad.
